Online Wishing Well

Welcome to my wishing well.

People have been tossing their money into wells for a long time. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure the wishing well tradition is some sort of Christian Era secularization of an old Celtic idea from pagan Europe about sacred wells and springs. Whether this is their origin or no, wishing wells are just one great example of human beings' ongoing romance with the spirituality of divesting themselves of token sums of money.

The Internet has come a long way, and with seamless systems for moving money around digitally, why not simulate the wishing well ritual online?

We do everything else on the Internet, right? Sure, sure, there's something to be said for keeping spiritual rituals tactile, but maybe tossing your money away online will bring something new to the experience.


Anyway, I am a financially struggling young person, and this is my wishing well. My life isn't as tough as some people's, obviously, and all money tossed in goes to sustain my somewhat priveleged existance. I don't want to mislead anyone into thinking that their quarter wouldn't be better donated to the ACLU or Planned Parenthood or a Whitman Walker Clinic or whatever. Clearly there are better causes than this.

But I'll appreciate your contribution, all the same, and you'll get the novel experience of tossing away a little change into a virtual wishing well. So please feel free to throw in a little money, just as you would with a real wishing well. (Don't forget to make a wish)
